It’s meal time!

Who does not love eating.. Be it indian, chinese, mexican or italian, food is delicious.. The keys to staying fit and in shape are two: one is exercise and the second is eating right. The second half plays a more important role in being fit and healthy at the same time. Confused between being fit and healthy? Fit to many people means not eating and reducing weight which is not even close to being healthy. Being healthy is giving your body the right amounts of every nutrition it needs. The good news is you can get both at one stroke if you understand the simple logic of how much to eat, what to eat and when to eat. Let me take a day-to-day example to explain the working of a healthy diet. We put petrol in the car for the car to get energy and run. Every time we are about to run out of petrol, the car starts running on reserve until it completely drains out. Once the petrol tank is empty we refill the petrol. But most of the times, we make sure we refill before the car comes to a standstill. That is exactly how a body works. Every time you eat, the body gains fuel and you are ready to work. Once you reach the reserve, and by that I mean lunch time is nearing, your body is striving hard to keep you energized and in working condition. If you skip a meal your body runs out of fuel and starts taking the other valuable stuffs from your body as energy and continues to strive. The body is only getting weaker and weaker day by day by doing that regularly. The number of times a person must eat ever day to keep himself energized is six times. I know this number is not even close to practical. Go back to your school days and see how the school breaks were scheduled. You have breakfast in the morning, you have a small break for 15 minutes at around ten o clock where you get to eat some small snack or fruit packed by mom. Then you have a lunch break at around 1 o clock. You go home from school at 4 or 5 and you are exhausted and you have a little snack again that time. The dinner time is from 8 to 9 and mom forces the milk just before bed. That is what you should be doing every single day in your life. 3 big meals i.e. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and 3 small breaks between the big meals is a perfect meal plan to keep your oil burning and keep you energized. Now that does not mean you eat a four course meal every time you sit to eat or else by the end of the month you might end up looking like an oversized food processor. You don’t want that. Eat small amounts of meal and take a cautious effort to skip the fatty foods. Dont be lazy to pack the little snack the night before and remember to stick to the every 3 to 4 hours a meal plan. Also, make it a point to burn more calories than you take in. Only then you are benefiting by the diet. Most important of all drink plenty of water; at least 2400 ml per day.

Good luck and stay Fit!

Lights, Camera, Song, Action!

Lights camera action

When I was a little kid, my Patti used to tell stories from Ramayanam, Mahabaratham and many other stories of God. I was also a huge fan of the movie Thiruvillayadal as my Patti used to narrate the story again during bedtime in detail (the slang in the movie was not so easy to understand for a kid). I also learned that the Auvayaar patti in the movie sang and acted unlike others. She was none other than K. B. Sundarambal. Since then my mom has always told me how talented the artists were in those days. They were given just one chance to prove their singing or dancing talent along with the acting. Most of them came from acting in dramas to acting in movies. They were trained in that fashion where they had to perform in front of a huge audience and had to make it look perfect in the first shot. After that era, we had actors doing just their jobs and the singers theirs. We also had a lot of singers who came into acting like Mano and SPB. They found it exciting to put their own face into what they sang.  These days there is so much advancement in technology that they make even a not so perfect song sound perfect. But I am happy to see history repeating itself. There are many new actors who show interest in singing as well. So many actors these days volunteer to sing for their own movie or their own song. Furthermore, there are a lot of singers/actors in the Hollywood. I came across this wonderful actress named Bethany Joy Galeotti, better known as Haley James Scott for those who watch the series One Tree Hill, who trained herself in music and became a professional musician and used both her acting and musical talent to perform. One of my favorite songs by her is Halo. I wish this era continues for ever and the actors who make an attempt to sing take it to the next level and get well versed in the musical field too. Good Luck to all U guys out there.

Peace!

The grass is greener!

You take a decision and execute it. Half way of the execution you think to yourself what if I had not taken this road. And then sometimes it gets difficult to take the further steps. Every human on this planet has been there. Some of them have quit, some of them have just lived with that thought and have not been able to give their best and there are still some who fight that thought and have made it to their dreams. It will always seem like the other road not taken is either more fun or a lot more easier. My friend, feel happy by thinking the person in that other untaken road is also thinking the same way about you. Hang in there and you will reach the destination someday eventually. All it takes to reach to what you want is your full dedication and some hard work and most of all belief in what you have decided to do. There will be a day where people will start following what you once thought was a disastrous idea. The grass is always greener on the other side. But every walk of life is a challenge. It has it’s own ups and downs. So be glad you took this challenge and you have come halfway. Pat yourself and move forward!

“Do Not interrupt me when I am listening to my favorite music. Please let me listen to this song and then I will get you whatever you need.”  I say this a lot when my family or friends interrupting while I am enjoying my most favorite song. At that moment I feel like wanting to get isolated from the rest of the world and I want it to be just me and my music. It’s not practically possible for all. So how do I work it out. I combine the two things I love doing. Working out and listening to my favorite album together. I put on my headphones and wear my shoes and hit the gym. That way no one can say anything to you. It’s healthy because you are grooming yourself and you cannot be interrupted. I in fact bribe myself by saying I will upload the newest album for the next day if I workout today. That way, I get to stay motivated to do some exercise and enjoy listening to some good music. Please don’t feel disheartened if you are not a music lover and you are more of the book reader. I have seen a lot of people reading away to bliss while they are on their cardio machine like the stationary bike. I will soon be writing a list of my favorite songs to listen to when I workout. If you are lacking motivation plugin your headphones and get prepared to be fit.

Humming Head!

I have been humming from the minute I left for job in the morning. I am not finding a way to get it out of my head. I last listened to that song 3 weeks ago. Part of me is enjoying it being played inside my head. OK, the song i have been talking about is Piya Basanti Re. Who ever has not heard this song, stop everything you are doing and listen to it right away! A duet by Ustad Sultan Khan and K.S. Chitra who is one of my favorite singers is so beautifully rendered. The video of the song is just like icing on the cake. I am technically working, but my head is singing the song in muted mode. I am tapping my leg to the beat of the song. It’s like I have headphones worn inside my head. How insane is that! Tell me I am not the only one to go through this weirdness. This is making my  work a lot easier at my workplace. Try it sometime if you haven’t.

Happy Mommy’s Day!

My mommy is the world’s best mommy! I do not have to be a kid to say that. And still my mother will tell me I am her li’l one. The one and only person who has been with you from the minute you were destined to be created till the very last minute of your life in this earth is your mother, where ever she is. To give a part of her flesh and blood and to be reborn for the birth of you, she deserves to be worshiped before God. A human being can bear up to 45 del of pain. But a mother bears up to 57 del of pain to give birth to a new life. My salutations to my mother. She takes care of you and knows when you will feel hungry, she knows something went wrong at your school today listening to your voice on the phone. She knows it instantly that her daughter will like it when she sees it in the market. She covers up for you when you did something you should not have and are going to be yelled at. She manages to cook for you and your dad’s taste and balances beautifully. She is there as your equal when you need a friend. She is guiding you when you need an advice. She is such an all rounder. Hats off mom! I love you and always will! This song is for you.

Exam Blues or Exam Balloons!

Today I have my final exam of this semester. I am nervous and stressed out like any other semester or exam I have written till date. The atmosphere at my home before my final exam will be, Appa is not allowed to watch even news for half an hour, Amma is to cook light food as I will fall asleep if I eat rice. No dog  should bark on the street, no neighbor’s kid should play at my door step, and if possible I would have pressed the pause button for the entire street for me to study that one day.  And today, I notice I have not changed much even after seeing what others at my university are doing during the finals week. I got an email from my university saying there are a lot of fun and stress busting events like a massage therapy going on in the campus and I should participate too. When I read it I thought it was either a joke or meant for some body who did not have anything to do with this weeks finals. I walked into the campus and was thunderstruck. I saw some panju mittai stalls, some tattoo stalls, some balloon art stalls and a long line of tireless people waiting to get their turn. And the whole of student center was blasting with music. I am curious to find out how those people who ate panju mittai yesterday did in today’s exam. Wish I was so well prepared or easy-going.

Be Sportive!

This week I have my finals exam going on and I probably am the most tensed person in the entire planet now.Thats what I told my parents when they called me online to chat for a few minutes. I said I will come for 5 minutes and log off as I have loads to study. But my parents being my best friends start talking to me and I am completely into this interesting discussion about how artists must encourage each other for the betterment of themselves, loosing track of time. Anyways, I did my exam pretty well that day. At the end of the day I am happy I could handle both the fun and study. So coming to our topic for the day, I would like to share what exactly was the heated discussion that had more priority than my exam. Artists. They need not be just singers if that’s what you are thinking looking at my previous posts. They are any one who can enjoy, get involved in or encourage any art form. And who ever in this universe is not an artist? Everyone is. I like to sing, someone likes to cook, somebody else likes to look after a plant. They are all artists. One is a singer, the other one is a chef and the third one is a gardener. Being an artist the one thing that we all must possess is sportiveness. The spirit of  congratulating your competition or encouraging or even guiding a colleague is very difficult and brave. Putting aside all egos and appreciating one for their work even though you are not as good as them is what will get you to their level someday. I strongly believe that where ever one stands one must never forget if there are hundred people below you, then there are thousand people above you to where you have not yet reached. So looking at every walk of life as a learning process is what I think will get me to a higher position tomorrow. So, congratulate yourself if you have been sprotive till now, and for those who haven’t, start doing it today and see how good you feel to have appreciated someone.

Happy Birthday to Thyagaraja Swamy!

What can be a better day to start off with my first post on music than the blessed soul’s birthday! This day has brought in a boon to the world of music.  Ageless songs devoted to lord Rama came into existence because of Sri Thyagaraja being born. Today is dedicated to the God of music and I listened to his very first composition “Namo Namo Raghavaya” in flute played by N. Ramani and R. Thyagarajan. . It was melting in my heart to listen to it. I wondered how engrossed he might have got into the devotion for Rama that he could compose something so beautiful at the age of 13. The sahithyam and meaning of songs I listened to today is given below. I recommend anyone listening to the song to read the meaning also to get fully involved in how Thyagaraja has described Shri Raghava.

1. Namo Namo Raghavaya

Meaning:
Eternal salutations to Shri Raaghava, worshipped by sage Shuka. He is ever closely related to all who have none else to depend on, ocean of mercy that he is. He eliminates the sins of devotees as the sun dispels darkness. He is a patron of worthy poets. He grants the wishes of genuine devotees, just as the Kalpaka tree does. He is mentor of gods like Brahma, Shiva, and other celestials. He is concerned with the welfare of innocent and pious devotees. He is the destroyer of Raakshasaas. He is infinitely wise. He confers health, longevity, and prosperity on worthy followers. He lies on the snake AadisEsha and is fond of fresh butter. He is the sole witness of all that happens in the universe. With hands long and powerful like the trunk of a royal elephant, he flung the mighty Subaahu to the distant ocean by a single arrow. He is the protector of AadisEsha and Tyaagaraaja.

2. Tava Dashoham (One of Tyagaraja’s early compositions)

Meaning

Oh Son of DhAsaraTa!  I am your Daasan (Liege and servant). I have been seeking You and You alone all my life. Pray, Protect me, come to my rescue and listen to my appeals!  This is not the time to forget me. Convinced that here is no God equal or superior to You, in the entire universe I have surrendered at Your sacred feet. Oh Soft-spoken Lord!  Oh Blemishless One!  Oh Lord who has taken the garb of a human!  Oh Lotus-eyed One!  Oh Most sacred One!  Oh Lord of DevAs!  Oh One with matchless valour!  Oh Lord of Soorya Kulam!  Oh protector of the Sages of DaNDakAraNyam(It’s a place which covers half of Andhra Pradesh and a part of Orissa and Chatisgarh)!  Oh Lord of beautiful blue hue!  In the world, there is no God like You!  I perform SarNAgathi (complete surrender) at Your Lotus feet. Oh Lord slauted by Aagamaas (collection of Sanskrit scriptures) and free of any blemishes and the One worshipped and sung by ThyagarAja !  I have taken refuge in You.
